Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile

Description

As a senior engineer at Activision, I was part of the webtools team for Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. Our team’s mission was to design and develop web-based tools to facilitate the live operation of the game’s various configurations.

Examples of live operable configurations: Store inventory and scheduling, events and tournaments, global and user messaging systems.

My role: Design of web tooling system architecture, UI/UX design and front end implementation.

Goals

Build user-friendly tools accessible to non-technical operators, prioritizing UI over code.
Implement robust validation to ensure configurations are accurate before testing in the game.
Enhance the efficiency and accuracy of configuration creation using the web UI.

Challenges

Balancing usability, efficiency, and thoroughness in the tool’s interface.
Handling overlapping features with conflicting validation requirements, such as store inventory being used differently by various game features.

Resolutions

Collaborated with stakeholders to focus on frequently changed configurations, ensuring these were prioritized for ease of access, while less critical settings were nested deeper.
Created feature-specific manifests to simplify validation, with shared validation applied at initial data entry, and feature-specific checks added during manifest creation. This minimized conflicts and allowed multiple teams to work on the same configurations without issue.
